PROJECTS: HSPICE
Health Science Partnerships in Clinical Education (HSPICE)
is a University Initiatives Fund project to develop, implement
and sustain an interdisciplinary educational model for clinical
preparation of population-oriented, collaborating practitioners
across the six Health Sciences schools, the Health Sciences
Libraries and the Information School.
Many forces are combining in the move from services delivered
by individual practitioners to a network of services provided
by teams of professionals. This movement creates a blending
of traditional health care provider roles as care delivery
systems seek to provide the most cost-effective health care.
It is apparent that future health care providers who will
be working together in clinical settings would benefit greatly
from clinical education and training that recognizes and appreciates
the skills of other team members within patient care systems.
Yet, few health science students are specifically educated
to participate in such multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary
care or its evaluation. Health Science Partnerships in Clinical
Education (HSPICE) is actively correcting that situation at
the University of Washington.
University Initiatives Funds (UIF) provided a rare opportunity
to develop new models of clinical education that collaboratively
engage students and faculty from Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing,
Pharmacy, Public Health, Social Work and the Information School,
and the Health Sciences Library and Information Center. Our
intent is that all health science students will participate
in one or more curricular or extracurricular opportunities
created by this model. These opportunities will help them
gain respect and understanding for the complementary skills
of all participants by virtue of working together in a variety
of ways to solve clinical problems.
